Mainstreaming
Microfinance: How Lending to the Poor Began, Grew, and Came
of Age
in Bolivia by Elisabeth Rhyne, Kumarian Press, Inc.,
Bloomfield, Connecticut, USA, 2001.
The
book explores how social activists in Bolivia shaped the character
of the institutions that now dominate the countrys micro
finance sector. Elisabeth Rhyne traces how these institutions
proved that lending to micro enterprises could become commercially
viable. It also closely examines micro finance under the conditions
of commercialisation and competition that have altered the
dynamics of the new industry. The author has been involved
with micro finance since the mid-1980s and is today one of
the leading thinkers and writers on the subject. She has ten
years of leadership experience in the micro finance programmes
of the US Agency for International Development. As an independent
consultant, Elisabeth Rhyne has advised micro finance institutions,
international NGOs and governments. She is currently a member
of the senior management of Acción International.
